Don’t throw those pictures away!!!

November 19, 2012

Hello!

First, I am excited to announce that I am a guest blogger today on Speech Room News! Click HERE to head on over there and read up on evidence-based vocabulary strategies!

Okay, so I finally came up with a use for all my school pictures. You know the type-the kind every teacher/staff member is required to get, along with the students. I’ve always disliked this and never knew what to do with all those pictures! They almost always found their way to the bottom of my trash can. Not this year!

Carry-over of skills is hard. Many of my articulation kiddos can say the sounds but forget to say them in the classroom with their friends or teacher. I’ve been known to jokingly say to some of my students “Just imagine a little Mrs. Allison there on your shoulder in your class-reminding you to say your “good sounds.” Okay, I know I sound a little desperate but I am willing to stoop low for these students to master these skills.
Bingo! I came up with a use for my pictures! I simply cut out a little speech bubble (download HERE) and tape it onto my picture. I keep a few pictures on my counter and for students who are able to say the sound but are working on carry-over, I offer one to them to tape on their desk. I always keep it voluntary. I mean, I wouldn’t want to look at me all day either!
The result was surprising!

My kiddos love it! “Mrs. Allisons” have been popping up in several classrooms on desks at the elementary. Teachers and my principal laugh when seeing my picture but say it is working in their rooms! Even students that don’t receive speech all of a sudden want their own “Mrs. Allison” on their desk. So…as long as you don’t mind your picture in a few classrooms-brave the laughter and try this out!

Do you have any neat carry-over activities or techniques? I’d love to hear about them!

Come as you are. Leave encouraged.

THIS IS AWESOME!!! Now, I need to go find some pictures…..maybe even laminate them….since I’m not a speech teacher mine will probably say things like, “use your capital letters and periods” or “make your tall and short letters” or “raise your hand” lol! Love it:)

Hahaha…your friendly neighborhood SLP is always watching!!! It’s like you are the Santa Claus of speech…you know when they have used their good sounds and when they haven’t! Love it! Great idea and so simple! Thaks for sharing!!! On Adventures of Speech Pathology blog…she has a great simple handout she calls “Speech Sound Reminders”. She writes what her students are working on and tapes it to their desk. So for those of you that don’t have these great school pics to use, you can go there and get a nice little freebie at http://adventuresinspeechpathology.wordpress.com/2012/08/27/speech-sound-reminders/ Thanks for sharing Nicole…this is such a great idea!

I love the thought of an SLP Santa! Thanks for the link to Adventures of Speech Pathology. I will have to visit on over there. Let me know if you try the picture idea!

I love the idea, even for my high school kids! I have often complained of the “speech lady syndrome” where kids have perfect articulation when they are with me. As soon as they are out of my sight, they revert to their old ways.

This is hilarious!! Since you work with a couple of my kiddos, I’m thinking they need a “Mrs. Allison” picture on their desk. If not for the pure fact that this is an adorable idea haha! Thanks for sharing! 🙂 Happy Thanksgiving. 🙂

Great Idea! I have an eighth grader who is hearing impaired but he does very well in the speech room. Do you have any ideas to make him remember to use his good speech all the time? I know he doesn’t want to have to go to speech class in high school. Thanks.

First day of year 11 for me!  This is one of my f First day of year 11 for me!
This is one of my favorite verses and such a timely message for my students AND me!
This year my husband and I made the decision to homeschool our first grader. I was NOT thinking I would ever be a "homeschool mama" and I'm still not sure how it will all get done with me working part-time but here I am, praying for strength, and patience, and energy, and discipline, and thinking, "perhaps this is the moment for which I have been created?" 🤗

So if this year is full of uncertainty for you as well, know that He’s ☝️got this and I'm praying for the both of us, that we would shine brightly, and make the most of EVERY moment. 💗
P.S. (Because I know I'll get comments, I work at a private christian school, so I'm totally allowed to put verses on my door!) 🙏🏻

It’s my go-to when starting out articulation therapy. Simple, one syllable words that students are able to sound out provide a framework for phonological awareness skills which studies say also help increase articulation skills. 👏
