Flocabulary = Makes learning new words fun.
Admission: I don’t often sign up for subscriptions. And if it calls for me handing out money, well then you can forget it. However, this program offers a free 14 day trial period. My entire school signed up for it and I’m loving it.
So…what is Flocabulary?
Flocabulary teaches Tier 2 vocabulary words (the most common words in the English language) using fun videos, exercises, games and quizzes. For more on Tier 2 vocabulary, check out one of my best sellers Context Clues using Tier Vocabulary.
The best part? It’s research-based, Common Core aligned and is proven to raise student test scores. When I hear those words, my heart takes a little leap!
Here’s how it works:
Go to Flocabulary.com and and choose the category you want to work on. My favs are “Vocabulary” and “Language Arts”
If you choose “Vocabulary,” pick the grade level you want to address. For many of my kiddos, I need to go down a grade level or two.
Flocabulary provides tons of fun songs. Each song is provided with lyrics, challenge questions and fill in the blank questions.
Just look at this WH question video provided in the “Language Arts” section! My kids are having a blast listening to the song and “breaking down” with the 5 Ws!
Now we’re gonna break down the elements of a story. Of course we’ve got to answer those five W’s: Who, What, When, Where and Why.
Every single story that you read
Has a lot going on, you see?
Just ask five questions to learn more
About the most important details for sure.
Who are the characters? Who is involved?
Who’s the narrator? Who makes the calls?
It could be King Tut, it could be a mutt,
The next question we ask is “What?”
What is going on? What happened?
What is the plot? What-what is the action?
When did it happen? When did it begin?
Was it in the past or the future? When?
Where is this? Where on the map
are the characters? Where is this happening, in fact?
Why did this happen? Why is there is action?
Those are the questions, you know how to ask them.
Who, What, When, Where, Why,
Those are the five W’s, no lie.
Who, What, When, Where, Why,
Important details of the story, no lie.
Now get your popcorn, make sure it’s hot,
While I break down the story of Goldilocks.
Who are the characters? Well, there’s Goldi,
Papa, Mama and the Baby Bear only
What happened? Goldilocks went into a home
That she didn’t live in and she was alone.
She ate food, broke a chair, then fell asleep,
The three bears came home and pretty much freaked.
Goldilocks woke up and took off running,
That’s what happened in the story, keep ‘em coming.
When did it happen? Once upon a time, kid.
Where? In a forest that was oh-so-quiet.
Why was Baby Bear so upset?
’Cause Goldi ate his porridge and slept in his bed.
Why did Goldilocks run off with a shriek?
Because she was scared, but you don’t have to be
If you ask…
