*Please note: These SPARK Cards were provided in exchange for a review. No other compensation was given. The opinions are all mine though!
Lea, a fellow SLP, and creator of SPARK Cards, recently reached out to me to ask if I’d like to be sent a new resource she created and write my thoughts on them. After looking at them and reading up on the all the areas you can target, I couldn’t resist!
SPARK stands for: Sentence Formulation and Predicting, Answering Questions, Retelling Skills, Knowledge Of Basic Concepts
The set that I received contained 8 stories with 6 cards each:
- Preparing for a Hurricane
- Lemonade Sale
- Going to the Vet
- Playing Football
- Going to The Library
- Setting the Table
- Planting Flowers
- Going to the Beach
As soon as they came in the mail, my daughter Aislyn was immediately intrigued. Now, we’ve used them both at home as a family game and I’ve taken them to school to use with my students.
Here’s what I love about them:
- The pictures. They are super high quality and colorful. The cards are REALLY thick and well made.
- Each story comes with a “guide card” to direct the questions. This made it really easy for me working with my students to target a LOT of tasks.
My absolute FAVORITE thing about these cards is the amount of skills you can target with each student. It’s really incredible. In a span of around 10 minutes, I targeted sequencing skills, WH questions (both literal and inferential), predicting, comparing, story retell, and main idea. With the user card to guide the tasks, it makes it really easy to accomplish a lot within a short amount of time. Other tasks you can target include grammar as they retell, reasoning, and problem solving. I used with my (almost 5 year old) at home and also second graders.
In addition, Lea is so kind to offer my readers (YOU) a 5% discount on SPARK Cards! Just use the promo code SPEECHPEEPS5 on Amazon until March 20th, 2019 to save!
This one is definitely a great tool to have in your material box!
