Common Core Products: Ready…Set…Go!

August 10, 2013

If yours is like my district, you’re probably hearing those three little words A LOT right now:

Common.
Core.
Standards.

As the school year approaches (one week for me-ahhh!), many of us are busy attending in-services and education on these standards right now. Here are some answers to a few Common Core WH questions:

What are they?
The Common Core State Standards are two sets of standards (English Language Arts and Mathematics) that are intended to provide direction and focus in our teaching of grades K-12.

Why the need?
According to their website, “The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them.” In addition, these standards were designed to be relevant to the real world and focus on preparing our students for college and careers.

Who is responsible for teaching them?
Forty-five states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and the Department of Defense education Activity have adopted these standards.
I’ve heard statements like these many times:

“Surely SLPs do not need to teach the Common Core!”
“That’s only for teachers!”
“It’s not relevant to what I do!”

Actually, these statements are all false. As the expectations in the educational field become more and more rigorous, SLPs are definitely not exempt. We work in a school, we must play by their rules. Gone are the days when SLPs can justify writing goals for therapy based on “hunches” or “instinct.”  Instead, we must always include cold, hard data to prove why we want to work on a goal and align it to these standards. And yes, we can align articulation goals to these standards. 🙂

Confused? Overwhelmed? Feeling some anxiety?  I was having those very feelings this time last year and so determined to research everything I could about these new standards and do my job the very best that I could. The result? I created lots of Common Core Products for YOU! Any of these products make it super easy to look like an expert on this topic.

1. **Best seller!!**
For $5, this product is designed to give you direction on writing goals that are aligned with these standards. This document contains tons IEP goals (please note-each state has different requirements on writing goals-these just provide plenty of examples).

K-5 Common Core Standards Supporting IEP Goals for English Language Arts.

6-12 Common Core Standards Supporting IEP Goals for English Language Arts. Same product, only geared towards those upper level grades.

2. Speech and Language Common Core Cans. One of my newest creations, this product makes it quick and easy to gauge your student’s understanding of these standards. Contains 240 questions all aligned to the Common Core.
2. Superhero Common Core Posters for Speech and Language. An easy way for students to show awareness of why they are working on specific goals. Also a great way to demonstrate your knowledge of the Common Core to your administrator! Comes with both “I Can” and “I Will” statements for flexibility.
Here is my set of Superhero I Can Standards. I simply divided them based on category, attached them with ribbon on a cabinet and my students know which standard to grab as they walk in.

4. Curriculum Based Language Assessments aligned with Standards.
Quick and easy assessments to gauge where your student is performing. Great for assessing baseline strengths and weaknesses and for providing direction with writing IEPs.

Kindergarten through 5th Grade

6th Grade through 12th Grade

Well, I hope you found some ideas on how you can easily incorporate the Common Core into your room this year! I wish you and your students the best!

Come as you are. Leave encouraged.

I'd love for you to join my newsletter family so that I can start sending weekly encouragement as well as access to an entire library of free resources like this Student Self-Progress Report Sheet!

First day of year 11 for me!  This is one of my f First day of year 11 for me!
This is one of my favorite verses and such a timely message for my students AND me!
This year my husband and I made the decision to homeschool our first grader. I was NOT thinking I would ever be a "homeschool mama" and I'm still not sure how it will all get done with me working part-time but here I am, praying for strength, and patience, and energy, and discipline, and thinking, "perhaps this is the moment for which I have been created?" 🤗

So if this year is full of uncertainty for you as well, know that He’s ☝️got this and I'm praying for the both of us, that we would shine brightly, and make the most of EVERY moment. 💗
P.S. (Because I know I'll get comments, I work at a private christian school, so I'm totally allowed to put verses on my door!) 🙏🏻

It’s my go-to when starting out articulation therapy. Simple, one syllable words that students are able to sound out provide a framework for phonological awareness skills which studies say also help increase articulation skills. 👏
